£ód¼ has rich literary traditions.
£ód¼ was a place of birth of Julian Tuwim. The poet lived in a house at St. Andrew St. (today A. Struga). In 1947-1950 he was the artistic director of the Nowy Theatre in £ód¼. The city granted him The Literary Prize of £ód¼ twice (1928 and 1949), he was also granted doctorate conferred honoris causa in 1949 by University of £ód¼. Works by Tuwim were highly popular. His main works are: „Kwiaty Polskie", „Czyhanie na Boga", „Sokrates tańcz±cy". Tuwim was also renowned for children poems such as „Zosia Samosia", „Lokomotywa", „Rzepka".
£ód¼ appears in one of the most famous novels by W³adys³aw Reymont "Ziemia Obiecana". It was published in 1899.
The author created there a moving image of a developing new capitalistic metropolis. Reymont presented a wide realistic image of a city - factories and offices, restaurants and railway stations, parks and streets, palaces of the rich and ruins of the workers.
The life of Jan Sztaudynger was also related to £ód¼. Sztaudeynger was a poet, satirist, expert and exponent of puppet theatre. In the years 1945-1961 he gave lectures in National Dramatic School of Puppet Theatre in £ód¼. He was the editor of "Teatr Lalek" in £ód¼. In 1946 he published a collection of poems "Tranzytem przez £od¼" where he described the nostalgia for the literary cafe "Fraszka". In his "Klub Pickwicka" he recalls the mood and atmosphere of the contemporary £ód¼.
