So many famous people were born and lived in £ód¼, that it is not possible to name all of them.
Artur Rubinstein - the pianist known all over the world, comes from £ód¼. The State Philharmonics of £ód¼, and a covered passage connecting Piotrkowska Street and Ko¶ciuszki Avenue, situated opposite the house he was born in, were named after him, thus forming a stable link between the prominent citizen of £ód¼ and his birthplace.
Julian Tuwim - the poet, author of e.g. Kwiaty Polskie, was also the resident of £ód¼. In order to honour him, the inhabitants of £ód¼ erected a bench in front of the City Hall, with the statue of the poet sitting thereon and looking at his town.
The outstanding director Krzysztof Kie¶lowski also had close ties with £ód¼. He graduated from the Film School of £ód¼. His graduation film was entitled Z miasta £odzi which means From the City of £ód¼. He was the director of well known films, including Dekalog, Trzy kolory czerwony, Podwójne æycie Weroniki.
The life of W³adys³aw Stanis³aw Reymont, the author of Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land), was also tied to £ód¼, and resulted in the novel depicting realities of the 109th century £ód¼ of factory owners. It was filmed by Andrzej Wajda - also graduate of the Film School in £ód¼, under the same title, to become one of the canons of the Polish cinematography.
Presently £ód¼ may also be proud of outstanding personalities in the field of theatre, music, cinema, science and art, both coming from £ód¼ or tied to the city, like Roman Polański (actor, director), Leon Niemczyk (actor), Piotr Pustelnik (mountaineer climbing in the Himalaya), Daniel Libeskind (architect known all over the world), Piotr Trzaskalski (director).
